Outbrain S2S tracking: what to check before launch

Connect Outbrain campaign clicks to backend conversions with consistent identifiers, event names, and order values.

Start with the original click

Outbrain’s S2S integration connects conversions to an Outbrain click ID. Your server returns that identifier with the configured conversion event. The integration measures conversions originating from Outbrain; it is not a replacement for all-channel analytics.

Follow the handovers

Write down each system involved between the landing page and the final outcome. A checkout on another domain, a CRM integration, or a delayed lead qualification can introduce a break in the chain. Test those transitions deliberately.

Use a shared definition of a conversion

Marketing and operations should agree on what counts. Is a purchase confirmed when payment succeeds, or when an order is created? Is a lead simply submitted, or checked by your sales team? Use that definition consistently in the sending system and your reports.

Reconcile individual records

A dashboard total alone cannot show where an implementation failed. Follow a small set of known records and compare the sending system with the platform report. Check event naming, value logic, and repeated submissions. Explain differences in reporting windows before treating every mismatch as missing data.

Plan for ongoing ownership

Record who owns the integration and how they should investigate delivery failures. Recheck the flow after checkout changes, CRM migrations, or updates to your consent setup. Reliable measurement depends on maintaining the connections as well as building them.

Our Outbrain service covers that implementation and handover, with a clear scope and documented checks.
